The Gunners' Boss Admits Future Role Depends on Lifting Major Honors.

As he approaches his half-decade plus one year as manager, Mikel Arteta has stated plainly that his future at Arsenal is directly connected to delivering trophies.

Reflecting on: The Arteta Era

The former Arsenal captain took over on December 20th, 2019 and managed to steer the team to an cup win a short time later. But, that initial silverware is still his only top-tier trophy since succeeding Unai Emery.

“Yes,” he stated when questioned about his future past 2027. “Yet it's about today. And a lot of things have to happen in the near future as well to deserve that opportunity.”

This weekend sees the landmark with a fixture against Everton, the very same club Arsenal faced the day after his role was made public.

League Position and Pressure

With second-placed Manchester City playing against West Ham on Saturday afternoon, Arsenal face being knocked off first place in the Premier League before their own match begins. This situation arises even with Arteta overseeing a squad that has suffered over 100 injuries since the start of last season.

The manager is under a contract with a year and a half left on the extension he agreed to in 2024, but is acutely aware that he must deliver promptly.

Survival in the Job

He went on to explain, highlighting the constant necessity to validate his position. “In my view a manager needs to warrant the right to be here tomorrow. And that is determined by how you react, how you communicate, how you go into the dressing room, the instructions you give.”

He stated further, commending the unwavering support from the hierarchy, but pinpointing the team's buy-in as the key factor. “In the final analysis, the key individuals are those players... For six years, I’ve seen just players with a degree of commitment, willingness to improve and give the maximum to the team.”

Injury Concerns

Arsenal heads into the Everton match dealing with an additional absence. Defender Ben White has been sidelined with a strain that is expected to see him miss action for several weeks.

Confidence in the Path

Despite the availability issues and the immense scrutiny, Arteta feels the club's “focus and dialogue” are profoundly distinct from when he began his reign.

He pointed to the record-breaking achievements as evidence of progress. “Consider the performances, all the records that we... were breaking... We still haven’t managed to do that [win trophies]. But that shows the caliber we've reached.”

In closing, the manager stated, “That is a level that the Premier League has not seen before in the past. And our ambition is to achieve more lofty ambitions. And if we do that, I think we are on the right path to winning.”
