The Tottenham defender found the net twice as Spurs prolonged their winning streak in away games in the top division and delivered the Toffees their initial loss at Hill Dickinson Stadium.

The Toffees were undefeated in their last five matches at their recently opened stadium at the dockside location, having departed their historic home behind after 133 years at the end of the previous campaign.

But Tottenham's leader the Dutchman struck twice from set-pieces in the opening 45 minutes to place their impressive record at jeopardy, and they were failed to turn it around before the midfielder - set up by former Toffees attacker the Brazilian - nodded in a final goal to seal the victory.

The Everton defender thought he had equalized the scores a short while after Van de Ven's first goal, glancing a bullet header past the Spurs keeper from an set-piece.

The Portuguese striker, in the meantime, missed a handful of chances, while Vicario made a succession of fine saves to guarantee the London club went five away games without defeat in the English top flight.

But the VAR stepped in, instructing Craig Pawson to review the score on the screen and the official decided that the winger and Iliman Ndiaye were in offside positions and had interfered with the Spurs keeper.

The win moves Thomas Frank's team up to third in the Premier League, five points off north London rivals and leaders the Gunners.

Everton stay in 14th position and are six points clear of the drop zone.

Tottenham analysis: The defender fulfils duties at each end of pitch

Following a drab weekday display in the European competition against Monaco, where they managed a mere attempts on target, the manager opted for Randal Kolo Muani up front instead of former Toffees player the Brazilian.

The new arrival was failed to influence the game before being replaced for the substitute after an hour on the pitch, but it emerged he wasn't needed in the end.

Everton analysis: Everton missing finishing touch

Everton's new home had been a happy hunting ground, but it appears the novelty may have worn off slightly and supporters flocked to the gates after Sarr's final goal for Spurs.

The break in the team's unbeaten home run won't be a massive worry for the manager, but their striker situation will be.

The forward and the other striker - the Everton's pair of recognised centre-forwards - had scored only a single goal between them before the weekend's outing.

And they were failed to contribute to that poor tally on a wet and gloomy night on in Liverpool.

Beto's form was epitomized when he chose to overhead kick a clear chance from near the goal, even with having room and opportunity to readjust for a simpler attempt that would have challenged Vicario.

Barry, too, was unable to make an impact after coming on for Beto in the second half.

It wasn't for a shortage of chance. Most of the home side's attacks came through Grealish and the forward, who tirelessly delivered threatening balls into the Tottenham penalty area.
