As Sunbathers Escaped Violence, Popular Picture Shows Lifeguard Dashing ‘Full Speed’ To the Location.

Alexandra Ching, a permanent inhabitant of Bondi, has always considered the famous beach as her back yard. On that fateful Sunday evening, she, like many neighbors, detected pops ringing out around the suburb.

“Everyone did, but I reasoned it was too light and no one could see them,” she explains. She left her residence, she observed people “flooding up Bondi Road”. The looks she saw made it clear trouble had occurred.

Positioned on the road, conversing with a pair who had run up the incline in their swimwear, she heard someone moving up at her rear. The person was a beach patrol officer, dashing towards Bondi unshod from the nearby Tamarama beach – about 1.5km – while carrying a defibrillator.

“I noticed a person utter ‘excuse me’, and when I spun around I just saw this streak in blue,” she recounts. “He was zooming past. He was the only one running in the path that all the others was trying to get away from, while holding that large equipment and barefoot … He moved towards something that undoubtedly every fibre in your being would tell you to run in the reverse way.

“Just no hesitation, but just fully full throttle racing.”

A Powerful Moment of Bravery Amidst Crisis

The photo Ching captured of the lifeguard, since identified as Jackson Doolan, rapidly circulated as one of many moments of courage in the wake of the violent incident.

Andy Reid, a fellow beach safety officer, explained that Doolan, called “Jacko”, ran from Tamarama beach to support the rest of his team at Bondi, as well as to help surf lifesavers, officers and paramedics treating dozens of victims.

Local Response and Support

Doolan’s actions was part of a broader narrative to come out of the neighbourhood, with the patrol base adjacent to the location of the incident serving as a impromptu medical station. Reports indicate that fellow lifeguards were also seen helping out, such as rushing into the ocean to save people needing help.

Following the tragedy, messages of gratitude circulated widely. A social media message conveyed gratitude for the responders who exhibited that “goodness will always conquer evil”.

The group of rescuers later shared a communication, noting they were “coming to terms with what occurred”.

“Our thanks go out to all for your kind sentiments and encouragement. We are touched by the care shown towards our personnel,” the team wrote. “Eventually, we will share our stories in the belief that it helps those involved.”

Official Recognition

Waverley council, the governing body that oversees many full-time beach safety officers, said that the crew rose to the occasion from the moment the incident began right into late that nighttime.

“We have heard so many emotional stories, but the popular image of Jackson Doolan, sprinting from Tamarama to Bondi with a defibrillator so he could help preserve life is extraordinary,” stated a local official.

“Our lifeguards show dedication every day in ensuring our world-famous shores protected for visitors, but what we saw on that day should be celebrated.

“While we mourn and come to terms with the terror of this brutal and barbaric tragedy, I think it is vital that we reflect on just how much positivity we have witnessed in the midst of such evil.”
