The 2026 cars are expected to be more compact, agile and eco-conscious compared to current models.

Formula 1 has unveiled the simplified vocabulary that will be used to explain the technical complexities of its new 2026 technical rules.

The racing series is embarking on what is potentially the most significant regulation change in its competitive history next season, featuring fresh chassis and power unit regulations and the compulsory introduction of 100% sustainable fuels.

The new power units, which keep the hybrid V6 layout, boast a greatly enhanced energy storage, necessitating major innovations in the aero packages.

During grand prix events, pilots will tactically deploy ERS energy – potentially on flying laps – to extract the peak lap time.

Broad surveys were conducted with a diverse audience, including dedicated enthusiasts and casual observers, to determine which terms would aid comprehension of the main elements of the 2026 changes.

The primary aim was to present a set of intricate new areas of the sport as straightforward as possible for the global fanbase.

Consequently, older technical labels for some systems – such as "modes labelled X and Z" for the active aerodynamics – have been phased out in preference for straightforward terms that succinctly convey the real-world effect of the innovation.

Key Technical Innovations

Regulators explain that competitors will have more power to choose strategies regarding battery management, energy recovery, and efficiency.

The 2026 rules introduce a range of settings that will be visually displayed on broadcast screens to improve the fans' insight of the race battle.

  • Attack Mode: This takes over from the present overtaking aid. It provides a surge of additional ERS power deployable when a driver is within one second the car ahead to facilitate an overtaking maneuver.
  • Boost Mode: This is a on-demand power boost from the energy recovery system that can be deployed for offensive or defensive moves. It provides the driver full engine and battery energy at the push of a button.

Both of these crucial modes will have to be managed carefully, as the overall battery capacity is restricted.

  • Active Aero: Both the car's wings adjust their angles – opening on the high-speed sections for minimal air resistance and top speed, and sealing in the turns for maximum downforce.
  • Recharge: Drivers can recharge the energy store with regenerative braking, or during throttle lift at the conclusion of a straight or in corners where only partial power is applied.

Car Design Evolution

The next-generation machines will be more compact and lighter than this year, with a car length cut by 200mm to 3,400mm, width narrowed by 100mm – down to 1,900mm – and the minimum weight decreased by 30kg.

Overall downforce is anticipated to be reduced by approximately a significant margin, although constructors will naturally regain performance as they optimize their packages.

Air resistance has been reduced by 40%. The vehicles will utilize moveable wing elements – front and rear wings will move on the straight sections to cut resistance and enhance velocity and revert into place for optimal grip in corners.

Tyres will continue to use 18-inch wheel rims, but the actual tyres will be narrower, by 25mm at the front and three centimetres on the rear.

Power Unit Revolution

The revised hybrid units will have an roughly half-and-half distribution in horsepower generated by the ICE and the ERS, a rise from about one-fifth electric power in the current formula.

The ERS setup is streamlined through the deletion of the complex turbo energy recovery device, the sophisticated and pricey device that recovered energy from the turbo.

Every car on the grid will be mandated to operate on carbon-neutral fuel, produced using biomass or lab-created processes.
